Varun was introduced to politics for the first time by his mother during the 1999 election campaigning.

In the year 2004, along with his mother Varun Gandhi Party joined BJP (Bharatiya Janata party).

In the 2009 General Elections, from the Pilibhit constituency Varun Gandhi party fought the election for Lok Sabha. He won the seat by receiving 419,539 votes and defeated VM Singh, his nearest contender, by a margin of 281,501 votes.

The BJP had Rajnath Singh appointed Varun Gandhi Constituency in the year 2013, as the National General Secretary of the BJP. He was the youngest-ever General secretary of the party. 

In the 2014 General Elections, Amit Singh was defeated by Varun from Sultanpur.

Controversies

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections campaign in Pilibhit, Varun made a provocative speech against Muslims. After that, a case was filed against him. He was arrested and for 20 days he had to stay behind the bars. 

On March 29th, 2009, UP booked Varun under the national security act for inciting communal tension in India. 

He attracted another controversy related to his academic certificates when his petition to nullify the speech case against him at the Allahabad High Court in 2009. In his petition, he mentioned that he was a graduate of the London School of Economics (LSE) and completed his master’s from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). But the university denied this claim of any such degree being taken by him and clarified that he had gained his degree in LSE by the long-distance learning provision and he had only enrolled for SOAS but never finished the degree.

In the year 2015, Lalit Modi, a former IPL chief who had been terminated by the Enforcement Directorate on the charges of money laundering, stated that Varun said to him that he would settle everything with his aunt, Sonia Gandhi when Lalit claims that he met Varun in London a few years ago. Lalit even asked Varun to clarify whether he had been in his house or not. For this Sonia Gandhi had to come forward to deny the allegations of Lalit.

In the year 2016, arms manufacturer and dealer, Abhishek Verma alleged that Varun had leaked the secrets of the Defence to him. However, the allegations were denied by Varun. And later, Abhishek claimed that all reports were fabricated.
